PV (Photovoltaic) Solar Systems –How do they work?
- Sun shines on the solar panels generating DC electricity.
- The DC electricity is fed into an inverter which converts it to 240V 50Hz AC electricity.
- The 240V AC electricity is used to power appliances in your home.
- Surplus electricity is fed back into the main electricity grid.
Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels or PV systems are reliable and pollution-free energy producing systems. They allow you to produce your own electricity without noise or air pollution, from a clean, free renewable resource – the sun. Whenever the sun shines, DC electricity is generated by the solar cells in the panels. The grid connect Inverter converts the DC electricity into standard 240V 50Hz AC power for use in the home. When your Solar System produces more electricity than your home uses the excess will flow naturally back into the main electricity grid causing your meter to run backwards. Thanks to the Government’s Feed-In Tariff incentive a simple change of meter will also allow this excess electricity to be sold to your retailer for a healthy profit.
